DEPARTMENT: Natural Cultural Resources-Environmental
JOB SUMMARY: The Estuary Field Biologist will assist in the implementation of natural resources research, monitoring, management, and protection projects within the Tribes "Usual and Accustomed" area to protect and preserve the Tulalip Tribes treaty resources and aid in salmonid population status and trends monitoring efforts. Leads a sampling crew in the Snohomish estuary to study the interaction of wild and hatchery raised Chinook salmon. Supervisory role and will require the operation of a small skiff in riverine and nearshore marine environments deploying nets and other sampling apparatuses to facilitate scientific biological field sampling projects. Experience with the collection, handling, and identification of estuarine fish including endangered fish species (Chinook salmon, steelhead, and bull trout) is necessary. Assist with other monitoring projects including test fisheries, spawner surveys, electrofishing surveys, vegetation surveys and other related monitoring efforts. Office duties - database creation, maintenance, management, reporting, and budget analysis. Will work in adverse conditions, weather, and variable hours depending on the project and environmental conditions, this may include overnight shifts in offsite locations.
COMPENSATION: $30.23 hr.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Fisheries, or related Field. *Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year for year basis.
MINIMUM RELATED EXPERIENCE:
- Three (3) years of experience identifying juvenile salmon and other fish species.
- Three (3) years of experience conducting beach seining and fyke net trapping in an estuary.
- One (1) year of experience operating a boat and setting nets from a boat.
- Experience leading a sampling crew.
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/PREREQUISITES
- WA State Driver’s License.
- Must adhere to the Motor Vehicle Regulation. (Abstract Required)
- Washington State Boaters Education Certification or equivalent. *Will allow six (6) months to obtain.
- Electrofishing Certification. *Will allow six (6) months to obtain.
- Must pass an Agility exam to determine if physically capable of performing essential job functions.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a regular Full-Time position.
